Makonde Team is not just the few individuals who have decided that their role is to move to Tanzania from abroad but rather is everyone who has been, is, or becomes a piece of this movement. Therefore we are a diverse and constantly morphing community.
We are not the first community to move to Mtwara region with service in mind. We recognize that several organizations and groups are already at work in the region, and we, therefore, hope to communicate and collaborate with those groups so as to not duplicate work and also so as to work more productively toward shared ideals.
Makonde Team formally began in 2004 when a community of Christians in Searcy, Arkansas, began pursuing a vision for how they could serve people at far ends of the earth. Since then the team has broadened to include many others around the world, and the door remains open to anyone interested in partnering with this effort.
Within this team are those individuals/families that are moving to Mtwara region to live as long-term residents, seeking to learn language and culture and to join local communities in order to offer a new voice to an existing conversation and a new limb to an existing body.
